Custom Easing

Posted by JohnnyUtah Jan. 11, 2008 @ 5:30 PM EST

I tween a hell of a lot. I'm sure you read that and said "no shit sherlock". what. anyways -

I hate seeing awkward/bad tweens and if you don't use "easing" in your tween you should be ASHAMED.

In Flash 7 and before I would make a tween then put a keyframe in the middle and ease in to that point then ease out to the end of it to keep the movement as natural as possible. After all when you swing your arm it has to accelerate then decelerate to its stopping point - same theory.

In Flash 8 and CS3 you can custom ease. Below, is what I set to mostly all my tweens to achieve that somewhat natural acceleration/deceleration movement.

There's some more advanced examples HERE of what you can do with this handy little tool.

I'll probably be adding a bunch more helpful Norm Abrams like tips to help you make your flash just a bit better - and if you don't know who Norm is you should also be ASHAMED of yourself. :)

update: here's a LINK to Rtil's anipedia entry on tweening and easing. His custom ease in/out curve is a bit steeper than mine but check em both out and experiment.

Jan. 11, 2008 | 5:34 PM SaltshakerClock says:

when i ad a trial for Cs3, i was too stupid to figure out how to tween, and i thought i would get flamed, but bad tweening is possibly the worst kind of cheap animation there is. i was ashamed only once out of twice. :D

Jan. 11, 2008 | 5:46 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

tweening is a great tool and wields great power - but like spiderman you better wield it responsibly

Jan. 11, 2008 | 5:34 PM BoMToons says:

Wow, I didn't know that lil tool was there. Thanks for the heads up!

*high five*

I thought this was only for Flash 10?

: But I'm not joking.

Jan. 11, 2008 | 5:39 PM mystic8ball says:

Listen to Utah , he speaks wise words

and a tweening animation can look pretty bad without easing , like ... REALLY BAD

Jan. 11, 2008 | 5:40 PM Sekhem says:

I used to have an extension that did that in MX, I had no idea it was now included with flash.

Jan. 11, 2008 | 5:51 PM PicoZX says:

Thank you.

Jan. 11, 2008 | 5:51 PM BlueHippo says:

Yeah I only learned that a couple months ago... very useful :D PS thanks for making that image dummy proof ;P

Jan. 11, 2008 | 5:52 PM Matt-Frozenfire says:

Yup Custom Easing was Fully Covered in Rtil's Anipedia. You shouldfind and link it because It's full of animated examples and whatnot.

Anipedia is greatness..

Jan. 11, 2008 | 5:55 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

ill add a link - yeah he's quite in depth isnt he

Jan. 11, 2008 | 6:02 PM Leigh says:

As if I don't already know that shit. PFFF

Jan. 11, 2008 | 6:07 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

I'm still doing that middle keyframe hack. NOTHING CAN STOP ME.

Jan. 11, 2008 | 6:20 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

i think SOMEBODY needs an intervention

Jan. 11, 2008 | 6:26 PM Reyals says:

When I would tween I would alternate between Ease In and Ease Out for every other tween, or just use Ease Out. It made for some very funky animation. I never used Custom Wasing though, I might give it a try.

Jan. 11, 2008 | 6:30 PM Leigh says:

And now my balls hurt.

Jan. 11, 2008 | 6:31 PM chris-the-stick2 says:

i used tween once. lets just say teh results where... interesting!

I've known that for a while and I didn't make a big deal about it :l

Jan. 11, 2008 | 7:03 PM The-Super-Flash-Bros says:

Before that little graph came about we have to walk 50 miles in the snow and ice to get our tweens to work properly.

Jan. 11, 2008 | 7:14 PM Aeonstars says:

rtil wrote a tutorial on tweening? That's cool but...doesn't he hate tweening more than hitler hates matzoh balls?

Jan. 11, 2008 | 7:19 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

i was wishing for one of these just last night.
Thanks.

Jan. 11, 2008 | 7:57 PM Wonchop says:

I tried that once or twice but it never seems to work properly so I just stick with the middle keyframe technique.

Jan. 11, 2008 | 8:16 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

you gotta be real careful with it, but I think my method makes a pretty smooth transition

Jan. 11, 2008 | 8:07 PM Goonie says:

Yea. Luis taught me that trick. :)

BTW, we need to play some COD4 sometime soon.

Jan. 11, 2008 | 8:17 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

You JUST NOW found out about custom easing?

Jan. 11, 2008 | 8:17 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

no handsome, ive been using it since 8 came out, but hey im spreading the love

Jan. 11, 2008 | 8:38 PM Masquatto says:

When I saw that, I was like "oh boy, I bet they'll let me save preset graphs so easing won't be annoying!" I was quickly disappointed. :'[

I still don't see why you couldn't tween the early scenes in TM2. >8(
I know humanoid movements can be demanding, but I've eased full human characters many times doing things just as complicated as that scene, if not more so. :S

Jan. 11, 2008 | 9:04 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

its true...i skipped a few scenes

it's not that it's complicated - I've done far more complex stuff than that that I've never posted (for a variety of reasons) but it just came down to me being lazy/not haivng fun dealing with it.

Jan. 11, 2008 | 8:56 PM Masquatto says:

Meant to say "couldn't ease" in that last comment.

Also, I thought it was there before 8, but I'm probably wrong.

Jan. 11, 2008 | 9:07 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

double checked my copy of flash MX 2004, no custom easing. you could however do regular easing as far back as i can remember

Jan. 11, 2008 | 9:15 PM Zoidburg says:

Hey JohnnyU love ya :3.

Jan. 11, 2008 | 9:41 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

there's atleast one...or two. I won't let you down.

and for the record, if I fbf'd it, you wouldn't get the next episode until 2017

Oh, why didn't you say so? That I can totally understand. Too well.
Too well...

"double checked my copy of flash MX 2004, no custom easing. you could however do regular easing as far back as i can remember"
Ah. I guess that explains why I first noticed it shortly after I got 8 a couple years ago. I dunno. It just always felt like one of those "I never noticed that" things that must've been there a while.
Oh yeah, I've been easing since Flash 5. I was just talking about the graph thing.

Jan. 12, 2008 | 3:22 AM Scribbler says:

What a great revelation! I was never aware that there was such an option in Flash. Whenever I tween, I drag the object from point A to point B say 50 frames and then every 10 frames, I manually select the location of the tween but this is VERY interesting indeed.

Thank you's.

Jan. 12, 2008 | 6:10 AM iLott says:

Well, this was sure thing that get me some time untill I find out its there. But I would love to have this thingy in shaping ease too.

Jan. 12, 2008 | 12:55 PM Jarus says:

I'm currently working on the flash series based on the "Hostile Galaxies" universe. I consider my movie to be some kind of a machinima, because almost all the animation is made manually with script, using special animation classes created by myself. They use different movement formulas, so the animation is quite precise, and I can add custom complicated acceleration/deceleration movement. Characters' faces are also created with my face engine, so I do not need to create their heads rotation animation each time - I only have to add a head (which is my engine's object class) to the stage and move the face direction (and eyes direction if needed) marker on screen. It's like that Site pal service. I know, this is an unusual way to create movies, but it frees me from doing different dirty work and just helps me to work faster.

Jan. 12, 2008 | 1:45 PM Glaiel-Gamer says:

WOOT FOR MACS

Anyway I knew about easing for a while, and when I do do animation (rarely), I add the ease cause it's ridiculously ease-y to implement, and makes my noob animations look less noobish.

When you're walking down the street, and you see a little ghost, what you gonna do about ghostbustaz! *Low Five*

Jan. 12, 2008 | 2:16 PM Luis says:

actually the easing settings you have are quite comfortable. I'm impressed. I usually rarely use that blasted graph. Was just messing about just now.

Tweens without easing. It's like watching a small child getting raped by a 10 ton grizzly bear. It's disgusting.

Custom ease tool is okay.. Though in my opinion you can get good flow without it just using digits if you're smart about it. I never really used it when flash 8 came out.

I remember YEARS ago I was preaching to everyone to use easing. Pretty sure I showed Masquatto, Cycon and a ton of others how to.

Jan. 13, 2008 | 11:07 AM JohnnyUtah responds:

good analogy

are you SARCASTIC Samurai today?

but anyways when you have a ton of tweens like I do, on several layers, backed up against each other - they're easier to keep track of without every one of em being split into two.

I still add a center keyframe and ease in/out my tweens. Funny thing is, your custom ease looks kind of like the amplifier I use to fade in and out the beginning and end of audio clips when I move them around (like if I need to use only part of a song, and want it to sound like it starts and ends at those moments).

Jan. 20, 2008 | 12:46 PM jackbliss says:

I dunno but I've always believed tweening is a sign of laziness and weakness for real animators to use . If you ask me tweening less and working Frame by Frame more can eventually make you animate better even when you're not using Flash. Plus excessive tweening gives far more smoothness to animation than there should be. Your art and animations are great Mr.Utah, but artists like Mr.Adam Phillips will ALWAYS be far better because he tweens far less and does more frame by frame work as you can see in this video...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYmyD7 2-IWQ

Final verdict. Tweening GREAT for amateurs using Flash all their life, NOT for wannabe professional animators.

I myself use tweening strictly for camera movements like panning, tilting, etc. Thanks for cool tweening tips anyway though :-)

CHRiS

Jan. 20, 2008 | 3:58 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

this explanation will be longer than it should be but the sad truth is only animators care about animation quality.

i dont want to spend 3 years animating something that only a handful of animators will appreciate and respect me for...besides, tankman is dialogue based and the frame by frame isnt neccessary.

third, im not much of a fbf animator and prefer illustration instead

I can't believe people didn't know about this lol.

Also if ou use the symbols of tankman and fbf with them like in madness for instance then the animation would be better and you could have all the character on one layer and it won't take two long to animate

putting all your symbols on one layer is a HUGE HUGE HUGE MISTAKE.

every symbol having its own layer is the only way to go and the only way to make any possible corrections.

Yeah.. Maybe I'm the one that was pussy hurt, I finally get to play a Gears with one of my heros and one of his friends kicks me out for playing the game.. You're one of the reasons I'm going to NY school of visual arts, just one.. But after I saw those Oil paintings you did.. and just your art in general I thought, hey thats pretty cool I wish I could do that.. I look forward to brining exclusive **QUALITY** content to Newgrounds in the near future.. Unlike the shit I have in my submissions record right now. :) Stamper is an influence too.. He's been really kind to me quite a few times and I really appreciate it.

Thanks.

RIGHT its that time again where i tell you about my religion so i have bin thinking people need to know more about KAS GOD OF CHAOS well i have come up with these things you need to know oh and i will put this into a story thing so yeah

before the world was ever made there was just a core and on that core there were a race called the kiee'ins they were living on the core of the world when some guy named guoipd the so called Christian "god" one day decided that their world was to tiny to fit all of the kiee'ins race now he was kinda of his head but he talked to all of the kiee'ins and they liked the idea of a bigger world so they got to work building and building and building still well their world was all must 2X as big they stopped and said wow look at how big our world has gotten and of a little time things were fine till one day guoipd then said "ummm this bigger world is alright but it could be bigger" so he asked the kiee'ins race if they would make it bigger but this time they said no and kicked guoipd out on his ass and so the kiee'ins lived on in more or less happiness but guoipd was pissed off really pissed off so him and his friends made a cult called Christianity which really pissed off the kiee'ins and so they fought over the century killing each other till all the body's of their race made the core much more bigger 4x as big so guoipd stopped and said hay i like it but their was now only 10 or so kiee'ins left in their world kas and guoipd and some of his friends kas was forced into the world to live in the nexsits which is an under underworld and guoipd re-named him self as the Christian GOD and his friends other gods of this world so thats the story of kas. well its alot more about his people but fuck you

I love easing tweens, they just look so... awesome.

Feb. 5, 2008 | 8:13 AM LordZeebmork says:

I almost never use custom easing. I still do the keyframe in the middle thing.

And iceblockclock's movies are perfect examples of how not to use tweens.

Feb. 5, 2008 | 8:15 AM LordZeebmork says:

of course, now that I think of it, that's probably because I'm too much of a lazy bastard to make anything worth watching.

I oprefer fbf, but sometimes tweening gets just as good results (or better when you need a smooth movement). Thx for the tip anyway :P
