JohnnyUtah

A DISTURBING TREND

Posted by JohnnyUtah Dec. 2, 2007 @ 12:12 AM EST

When you hear somebody you know hasn't played a certain game you usually don't bat an eye, but will kindly recommend it if you're a fan of it.

A disturbing trend in the office here is when I hear my cohorts haven't seen a particular movie. It just blows my mind. My first reaction is to shout "HOW COULD YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THAT" before I regain my senses and realize I probably just covered them with spit as I was frothing at the mouth in a complete frenzy.

To back up a bit, I play my fair share of games for fun and would obsessively play some games on the hardest difficulty until I saved the fucking galaxy, but my primary form of entertainment has always been movies. It seems like the list still mostly pre-dates this century. In fact, if you watch my stupid cartoons like Tankmen and have seen a trend of me animating macho tough guys with dry wit and bad attitudes it's all grounded in the movies I was raised on.

Growing up, and god dammit I hope some of you can relate to me here, I gradually collected movies on VHS - not the ones you could buy in-store. Oh no, my collection consisted of shit taped off HBO at my grandparents house (because my family never got cable since we grew up far outside the cable companies boundries). Not even good quality mind you, I was a kid and couldn't be buying all these VHS tapes, so I recorded everything at the lowest quality (SLP) so I could fit 3 movies per tape. I know right, some of you have no idea in sweet hell what I'm talking about.

ANYWAYS, I grew up watching the same movies over and over - since you know, I didn't have cable and I beat Super Mario Bros. for the umpteenth god damn time.

All these movies usually featured cops, marines, space marines, etc. kicking ass and exchanging witty dialogue (mostly).

I'll list off a few that fit this Criteria:

Action Jackson
Beverly Hills Cop
Commando
The Running Man
Conan The Barbarian, Conan The Destroyer
Die Hard
Escape From New York
The Terminator
Highlander
Mad Max, Mad Max: The Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
Predator
Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom
Blade Runner
Aliens
Total Recall
Robocop
Big Trouble in Little China
Top Gun

and of course - Point Break - the movie from which my unshakable username spawned.

These movies shaped me into the idiot I am today. I'm deeply disturbed (perhaps wrongly) when I meet people who haven't seem em. If I ever got stuck in a situation with bank robbers, or terrorists, or acid spitting aliens, or a post apocalyptic waste land filled with assholes wearing spiked shoulder pads trying to kill me, WELL I'd be damn sure I'd be trying to belt out memorable and hilarious one liners the entire time.

That's how I view Tankmen, a movie from the 80s that takes place in the desolate future. Speaking of which, I'm working on new episodes and hopefully they make you laugh and not hate my guts for being super lame.

If you got any movies that shaped that fragile young mind into the psychopath you are today, go on and list em if you dare.

Dec. 2, 2007 | 2:27 AM Afro-Ninja says:

Of your list, the only ones I've seen are terminator and indiana jones

I never watched movies when I was little. All we had was an antenna, with the local channels. My parents never owned movies, and we rarely, almost never, saw movies in theaters. Like, the only thing I even REMEMBER seeing with my parents is Batman Returns.

I get made fun of to this day about my poor selection of viewed movies =(

Dec. 2, 2007 | 3:15 AM JohnnyUtah responds:

you're missing out afro ninja

Dec. 2, 2007 | 2:41 AM Tyler-Stewart says:

it was a valiant effort

Dec. 2, 2007 | 2:48 AM Stitchz says:

I would name some of the movies I grew up on, but you already did. We may be psychopaths, but at least while shouting those one lines we know the diabolical solution to the apocalyptic situation.

Shit man, we psychopaths gotta stick together. Only we save the world!

YAY for mind twisting, sleep depriving, thought devouring movies!!!

Dec. 2, 2007 | 3:23 AM JohnnyUtah responds:

yeah when the world goes to shit all you gotta remember is whoever controls the water has the power AND avoid all the assholes with spiked shoulderpads

Dec. 2, 2007 | 3:02 AM J-Rocker says:

Oh oh on your next Tankmen episode you should have someone empty an entire clip into the air while screaming or someone jumping through the air in slow-mo while shooting a gun! Better yet TWO guns! That'd be awesome.

Robocop
Terminator
Indiana Jones
Hot Fuzz
Shaun of the Dead

Those movies are awesome.

Dec. 2, 2007 | 3:16 AM JohnnyUtah responds:

i should have added robocop of course, but screw typing out the hundreds of movies ive seen back then

Dec. 2, 2007 | 3:21 AM KupaMan says:

I mostly grew up with my mom, so I'm well knowledged on such classics as Pretty Woman, Truly Madly Deeply, and most other movies that single mothers try to relate to.

Other movies were a few of what you listed. Mine particularly, though, were Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1 and 2, Jurassic Park, Die Hard, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Predator, the Indiana Jones trilogy, and Quigley Down Under on a Super 8 tape.

Dec. 2, 2007 | 10:47 AM JohnnyUtah responds:

TMNT 2 was a crowning achievement...it featured Vanilla Ice yet was still watchable

Dec. 2, 2007 | 3:25 AM KupaMan says:

Bruce Lee movies, the Chinese Connection is the best.

I can't forget Mad Max, The Road Warrior is one of my favorite movies (omg did thunder dome suck!)

Akira was weird

no one can be a psychpath unless they've seen Natural Born Killers (which I don't suggest anyone does, it changed me for life)

Also: The Warriors

p.s. keep up the good work with Tankmen.

Dec. 2, 2007 | 12:26 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

at college we for some reason only had 2 movies in the living room - one being natural born killers. ive seen it more than i care to remember.

Dec. 2, 2007 | 12:27 PM Gi-go says:

I did the same thing as a kid

I think Cyborg with Jean Claude was my number one influence, have you seen that? It has the same early 90s grungy feel as most of the movies you listed do. Then The Kickboxer, The Crow, and The Warriors, and every Bruce Lee movie were big influences on me.

The Day the Earth Stood Still and the Twilight Zone are also fun for messing with me ^^

I watch my share of everything, but nothing has made me more psychopathic than the above films.

Dec. 2, 2007 | 2:43 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

good list

the day the earth stood still is great, as i just commented below and ive sat though 12 hour twilight zone marathons as well as the movies. Rod Serling is the man

Dec. 2, 2007 | 12:33 PM LtMcMuffin says:

There wasn't a single movie on your list I haven't seen, and to this day I would still watch any one of them!

Keep in mind these were all pre-High school...
UHF
Flight of the Navigator
Howard the Duck
Legend
The Wizard
Evil Dead Trilogy

Robinhood Prince of Thieves
Blazing Saddles
The Professional
Last Man Standing

I have about half of those listed on VHS. I have one that has Predator and Top Gun on the same tape. I think another one was the live action He-Man Movie + Red Sonja (was supposed to be another Conan I think). There's also one with Superman 2 and the Duck Tales movie. Kind of a strange combo. The movies that destroyed my fragile young mind go as such:

Batman(2)
Alien(s)
Back to the Future(1&2)
Jason and the Argonauts - that shits oldschool
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Terminator(2)
Ghost Busters
Predator

Killer Slugs
Killer Bees
The Stuff (best horror movie that has ever existed)

ive seen like half of the movies on your list, die hard, conan, predator, terminator (and the second one:D), and point break(parts of it). But then again i'm still young enough to watch psychopathic films to shape me into an insane maniac! (reading the comments and i watched the second half of american history X yesterday, and now i wanna watch the whole thing just to see the curb stomp!) (( and also my fave movies right now consist of: Donnie Darko, Troy, South Park Movie, Jay and Silent Bob, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Jet Li's Fearless, Monty Pythons Holy Grail, Terminator 2, and my youthful fave would be the Mortal Kombat(s).))

Yeah, I used to have tons of SLP VHS, too, up until I bought my PS2 and started investing in DVDs. I used to love taping movies off of the Independent Film Channel (I had cable). That's how I saw some of favorite movies, like the original Assault on Prescient 13 (John Carpenters rules; writing, directing, and making the music?!), Blue Velvet (David Lynch is awesome weird!), Falling Down ("wait, I"m the bad guy?!"), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (and the earlier Bill Murray version "Where the Buffalo Roam") and the wonderfully god awful Demolition Man ("he doesn't know how to use the shells...").
Those were the days.

My sick fuck of a dad tryed to hide his dirty porno in a falsely labeled cover.

Ghost busters

Drunken Master
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Dazed and Confused
The Matrix (first one)
Termanater 2
Out Cold (This is my favorite stupid comedy)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
The Boondock saints
Sin City

Anime:
Cowboy Bebop the Movie (Anime aside, this is one of my favorite movies)
Akira
Endless Waltz

I'm bad at making lists of movies. The best movie conversations are face to face when you can both comment off of each other and do that thing where you agree with something and get all excited.

of course you lack Zatoichi, Wasabi, Leon the Professional, Terminator 2, Shaun of the Dead, The Boondock Saints, and the very few animes that, when translated into English, actually still make sense - like Ghost In The Shell and Cowboy Bebop - but since Tankmen is one of the funniest damn things Ive ever seen, I will more than forgive you.

I just read EVERY response, and I have seen every movie mentioned at least twice.

If you can stomach reading subtitles, check out the work of Takashi Miike, Ichi the Killer is horrifyingly delicious.

Also if you want to see something REALLY fucked up, check out the movie VULGAR it's produced by Kevin Smith and it's about a clown that gets gang raped. It stars the guy who plays Dante (Brian O'Halloran). Really mindraping stuff.

I could go on, and, on, and on, and on, but I won't because I don't want to type that much.

I too taped VHS movies at low qualities and then would play them back. We're practically twins.

Dec. 4, 2007 | 12:03 AM JohnnyUtah responds:

I'm looking at the Ichi the Killer dvd right now..in it's blood bag dvd "case" if you can call it that...frankly, im afraid to watch it. I saw the trailer with a dudes face sliding down a wall..well enough about that.

formative films.

dumb and dumber.
back to the future trilogy.
toy story 1 and 2. (toy story 2 is the most beautiful film about childhood ever made)
the second austin powers film.
dr. no.
moonraker
all indiana jones films about 400 times
the original star wars films
robin hood (the animated fox version...)
the shining (the most terrifying film ever, fuck the exorcist)
groundhog day
ken park (it's exploitative porn, but at least the director was trying to show teenagers as they are, as opposed to hollywood bullshit)
big (a classic film, brilliantly written)
american beauty - every time i sit down to write something, my starting point is plagiarism of this film.
ghost world - in my opinion, the best film ever made, and i've seen a lot of films
face/off (it's essentially trash, but nic cage is a cool bad guy)
the return of jafar - i don't know why, this always appealled more than the original aladdin.
mother
edward scissorhands
fantasia
high fidelity
say anything - i'd see anything with john cusack in it, because of this film.
ferris bueller's day club - shake it up baby now.
about a boy - just for toni collette in this film, i normally hate her, but my god she's amazing in this film. it's such a bizarre film and you know where it's going but some lines just stick in your head and when she says to her son nicholas "when you sing it brings sunshine and happiness into my heart", it's such an awkward, out of touch but loving moment it's brilliant. it just summarizes her character and it's classic.

The movies I watched over and over as a kid were an odd mix. I think my top three were "Ghostbusters", "The Naked Gun", and "What About Bob". Taping them off broadcast TV led to me being shocked to find out years later that the versions I watched/memorized were missing scenes.

Not just action movies.
And there is nothing wrong with them, but people who won't enjoy a movie unless there is an explosion or blood every 5 seconds piss me off...
CHEERs to more tankmen :D.

Seen every film on the list. Pride is quite a sensation. The thing is, about half those movies came back with shitty sequels or terrible thirds'.

Though my generation hasn't produced half good movies as the ones on that list.

Oh well, anyways nice layout!

Did you like highlander the series?

Most of my background in movies is scifi and... something else probably.

Dec. 5, 2007 | 7:04 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

part 1 is BY FAR the best.

part 2..well whatever version you're going by (the quickening edition?) with the alternate storyline is eh...

3 sucks period

Dec. 5, 2007 | 6:32 PM pigtailsboy says:

actualy now that I think about it scifi doesn't cover my background even in part so I don't know why I said it.

I like your interests though. I can't separate the 80's from robocop... just looks like it was some sorta dark time. As if every place was like detroit, dark and filled with criminal punks.

Long live magnetic tape.

Ups to Johnny Dangerously, you do need to see that one. I did the whole taping movies off TV thing too (I'm even a year older than you!), but I was more "shaped" by later stuff... all the bad early-90s cyber-punk shit... Lawnmower Man, The Matrix (but not those shit sequels), eXistenZe, Hackers... I got that fucking CS degree I'll never use because my grand dream was to either design games or do movie CG... also, I have tried to watch scrambled porn and it hurt my eyes :(

Short Circuit...and the sequel, Short Circuit 2 (how creative)...reminds me that I need to snag those sometime.

The Naked Gun movies were also good ones, if I had good cable I think I may still be able to see them somewhere. Leslie Nielsen really made those moves, the goofy bastard.

i guess...yes

Dec. 14, 2007 | 7:21 AM DanWandin says:

I had a similar problem growing up except my tv reception was really shit and I had to get taped shows off friends and family.

Shows like The Simpsons, and Goosebumps (Go grandma!!) etc.

Have you seen Universal Soldier? I tell ya, we don't get movies like that anymore, what ever happened to the oldschool action heros like Van Damme and Schwarznegger and Stalone, movies these days are either sequels to shitty films or romantic comedies, and that's just bullshit.

Cheers.

I watched the first 4 Alien movies probably before I was 10.
I've watched every one time and time again, except three, because in my opinion, it sucked...

Anyway, my list is...

Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection
Predator
Big Trouble in Little China
Halloween (most of them, cant remember them all)
Evil Dead
The Exorcist
The Terminator
Blade 1 & 2
Die Hard 1, 2 & Vengeance.
The (original) Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

And some more, but I really can't be bothered with them all...

My dad was a horror fan also...

I'm 16, and while everyone else was watching ghetto shit, I was watching movies considered far too old for My generation. It was especially sad that in primary school I was the only one who could read and write properly, yet laughed at because I didn't talk like Ali G. I've also seen nearly all of the movies on this page, even if it was just to laugh at hammy acting.

Jan. 4, 2008 | 9:33 PM SirSeraphdeFallen says:

hahah i remember doing the same thing with the tapes. were you one of those people who tried to put movies of the same actor or a series of movies on the same tapes?

movies that rocked my youth. Rock n Rule, Fastimes at Ridgemont High, Can't Buy me Love, Gremlins, Hawk the Slayer (funny stuff) and tons and tons more.

I'm curious to know how you rate your favs. those are mostly pretty standard movies for their time, save blade runner, terminator, indiana jones and predator. but the rest...do you have a personal way to rate? i usually go for music quality (not popularity), presentation/ cinematography, and story. for those reasons my tops would be 300, shawshank redemption and empire of the sun.seen em??

Dude... I wasn't about to spend hours reading all of those comments... I did notice someone finally mentioned The Breakfast Club! Awesome, John Hughes was popular in the 80's with his renowned Brat Pack films! 16 Candles, Pretty in Pink & St. Elmos fire are definitely cult classics! I grew up on all of the said aforementioned movies in your list! I also really liked American History X (pretty much anything with Ed Norton is good)! Ravenous was a good flick... I saw it back when it came out like 11 years ago, before Wal-Devil (aka WallyWorld) repackaged it to sell as a twin pack sold next to Pathfinder (a rather disappointing movie if you ask me)! I like thought provoking films as well as good American cheese! I also spent many nights at my Grandparents watching cable (trying to catch TnA movies late at night when they were asleep, & my Grandfather was a light sleeper let me tell ya)! You can pretty much name a Movie that is 5 years old or better, & there's a good chance I've seen it, or it's on my "to see" list! They definitely don't make films now like they did then! Do you think that this current screenwriters strike could inevitably affect Moviemakers as well? God, I hope not!

In any case, I'm a huge fan. And I do remember that hideous collection of beat-up VHS tapes with the sloppy labels that ALWAYS managed to get eaten by the VCR in the MIDDLE of your FAVORITE godamn movie..........
