Lithography

Posted by JohnnyUtah Oct. 5, 2007 @ 3:06 PM EDT

hey kids, you want to know a totally idiotic and difficult way to make FINE ART?

If you can get your hands on some thick aluminum metal plates you're half way there. THEN all you gotta go is painstakingly SCRATCH a negative image into the metal - like a caveman making an image on a cave wall or something.

There's also some part about soaking it in acid, but god dammit i can't remember much about that step but but was a huge pain in the ass.

Then wipe it down with ink, wipe the excess off with acetone and the scratched in grooves will hold the rest.
THEN run it through a press. You can only get a few prints out of each run and then you gotta re-ink it.

You do get a unique look to it and every printing run comes out differently because you cant totally control the ink.

HERE'S ANOTHER ONE.

Anyways suffice to say the teacher wasn't a huge fan of my subject matter and he hated me since I never showed up to class. (back in thy year 2000)

Bitchin'.

Oct. 5, 2007 | 3:26 PM DibbityDan says:

So that's what lithography is... What a laborious way to make a picture. Like someone's going to have all this shit in their house. I like the Lincoln one though.

Oct. 5, 2007 | 3:30 PM Rozner says:

That must be a pain in the ass to make. Pretty though.

Oct. 5, 2007 | 3:32 PM MCU says:

That IS interesting! A good way to make pictures, and I bet you'd feel great after so much hard work and it comes out AWESOME.

Oct. 5, 2007 | 3:36 PM Countevil says:

Wow thats great. I've done printing before but nothing that good.

Oct. 5, 2007 | 3:54 PM Sonucais says:

Maybe pretty hard to make but I really can't say there's any error on those pics. Awesome ink style.

Oct. 5, 2007 | 6:14 PM piratey says:

I just drew angry faic in art, never anything else

Oct. 5, 2007 | 6:14 PM willy-wizz says:

Sounds like etching. I've done it before, I'm suprised so many people do it, it seems like such a niche way of producing art. You can work incredibly small details into your prints though.

Cool picture anyway, looks better than anything I ever saw the Print tutors create.

have you ever worked in lino? its pretty similar, you cut into a sheet of lino, which is essentially a soft floor tile material. You have to cut a negative image, then cover it in ink, print it, cut away a bit more, cover it in a different colour ink and print over the top or the original print, creating a... two colour image!
I'm glad I learnt how to do it, but of all the things to be taught at art college it seems like a low priority.

Oct. 5, 2007 | 6:55 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

yeah ive seen people use that in college, i never messed with it

Oct. 5, 2007 | 6:19 PM Billy-Bean says:

Don't worry Johnny, you'll think of something interesting someday.

Oct. 5, 2007 | 6:38 PM Nuke15 says:

How many exact o knife blades did you ruin to make this?

Oct. 5, 2007 | 6:55 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

you use blades far bigger than exactos

Oct. 5, 2007 | 8:02 PM spite-skater says:

We did the same thing in this art class at my school. Exepct it was with a rubber block instead of metal plates.

for some reason mine didn't come out as good as yours did o_O

Oct. 5, 2007 | 8:21 PM Genet says:

I have done the same with wood, well i guess its a bit easier to use metal, although I never heard of using aluminium plates for this but copper plates.
Is aluminium "soft" enough to do the scratches without waking up with muscle ache in your hand on the next day?

Oct. 6, 2007 | 12:53 AM Sidenote138 says:

we did that in art class sophomore year of high school. it was easier though. we used linoleum things to make the design on. mine was of a zombie biting a woman on the neck. i still have the linoleum thing.

Oct. 6, 2007 | 5:16 AM ZekeySpaceyLizard says:

I had to burn an image into a hunk of leather once.

Oct. 7, 2007 | 7:08 AM ShitOnAStick says:

Ya, in our college, Illustration students have to take so many fine arts classes. One teacher decided she wanted to teach Print making, which means, I had to do this for a second time. I'll never understand why any teacher knowing she is teaching a bunch of illustration kids print making is a good idea considering they deal with mass reproduction, and can easily and more efficiently turn to digital art with endless printing at hand, AND make a fucking image exactly how they want, rather than whatever a copper plate will let them do.
God fucking DAMNIT, I hate print making.

Oct. 7, 2007 | 11:00 AM JohnnyUtah responds:

yeah dont even get me started on that.

aka DOING SHIT THE REALLY OLD WAY FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN THATS ALL THE TEACHERS KNOW HOW TO TEACH.

in one design class we were literally pasting blocks of text onto foamcore board for a fictional newspaper we were going to print, but there were a roomfull of assholes in the next room doing it all on computers. why? because this class had been in the curriculum for 30 years and nobody ever felt like questioning it.

Oct. 7, 2007 | 7:54 AM StrawberryCD says:

poor abe

Oct. 7, 2007 | 8:57 AM Deetix says:

lolk

Oct. 7, 2007 | 11:23 AM snake23 says:

How come nobody in your class didn't suggest to use computers.
Plus, I don't get why you are doing this, your vector art is so amazing and so are your oil paintings.

Oct. 8, 2007 | 12:40 AM JohnnyUtah responds:

I think you missed the parts where I said this was for a college class in 2000.

christ almighty.

Oct. 10, 2007 | 2:09 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

you mean the bullet didnt make a perfectly round hole in his head either?

Oct. 10, 2007 | 6:02 AM threelegs says:

Tried doing that in art once, too me ages to finish and get the fine details right.
It was all good, then the last layer my teacher suggested we put some crap on for tonal variation. Totally fucked up my linear work!

Well knowing the process, my god you have soo much patience. Cross hatching in the Frankinstein would've drawn me to an inch of sanity. Ahh wells that's the price to pay for fine art.

-OVER AND OUT

Oct. 10, 2007 | 5:44 PM Ninja-Kow says:

Oct. 15, 2007 | 10:08 PM ZombieswithJetpacks says:

pretty damn good, it does have a nice effect to it, I've done similar works with leaves believe it or not. Oh well that looks like it can be in an Muesam or something. You should try doing this with a tankman picture, the scetchy look would look well with it.

Oct. 16, 2007 | 8:27 PM Seamonky says:

I see a flaw. What the hell happened to Abe's ear? O.o

Oct. 16, 2007 | 11:32 PM Will-to-Live says:

That is an awesome end result, not to mention if you want to hand out several different copies, none of them have to be completely alike, and you don't have to use a scanner that might skew/disintegrate the end result.

May. 29, 2008 | 5:21 PM cuestaluis says:

Woo old posts that you may not read anymore!! Anyways I also make litographs, only difference is I use fucking zinc plates, I hate those things, and the fumes from the acid bath must be killing me very slowly but heck it's fun!! (except the part where you cut yourself with the raw borders of the plate OR the blades) anyways, as usual fuck your midas's touch man great work!
