so anyways

more on tankmen2 -

I think ultimately the script was kinda weak...and too random for my tastes. To make a poor analogy (and to shows I'm not comparing myself to) I'd like to have more South Park type jokes as opposed Family Guy type jokes. Both are valid, but what I mean is more humor that comes out of the situation unlike totally random like the cool aid guy busting through your living room wall for no reason whatsoever (even its just for a laugh).. I like the family guy, don't take that the wrong way.

My problem lies with the fact that I can never stick to a script. I write it out..and it mostly makes sense. Then when I'm recording I tend to come up with dialogue on the spot. I end up liking one thing I say even if it doesnt really jive with the rest of the script, then try to force it in and make it work. This is kinda what happened with Part 2.

That kinda thing just ruins my day

I just recorded dialogue for a new episode. It's more focused and if you liked 1.5 you should like this one too. It's not officially Part 3...I'll try my hand at mixing action and dialogue again with that one and hopefully it won't be a total clusterfuck like this last one.

That's all. lmaolol

Ya, noticed that TM2 didn't really flow that smooth. Still pretty good. Also, I noticed that you do quite a few of the voices...like all of them. So I'd think just grabbing one of your friends could add to it too. Don't worry too much about this one though, people still are willing to worship you :P.

i liked 2 much better then one :3

Sep. 28, 2007 | 11:19 AM FreekC says:

Definetly notciced the difference. Before I start picking I have to say Tankmen 2 is still awesome in it's own right and I lol'd my ass off... and seen as I watched it at college and they saw me using a proxy didn't go down too well.

I think the difference was that 1 and 1.5 were both completely based around the dialogue. They were both almost buddy flicks, with great scripts and not over the top, yet smooth animation. 2 was a little more slapstick, so it was still very funny, just different.

I can't wait for the next episode XD pleeaaasee include nightvisiongoggles guy some more ^^

I kinda agree with you on the script, but all it takes to win NG over is good animation, and boy do you rock at animating! 8) Tankmen 2 was great, but 1.5 is still my favorite. XD

Yeah, Tank Men 2 was good one but it was still bit random.
But I still liked it a lot.

Sep. 28, 2007 | 11:58 AM BunnyClock says:

I really liked tank men 2, the son of a gun joke was really clever! The private skiddles joke was a bit weak but the canon spinning 180 degrees totally made up for it!

NICE WORK JOHNNNNY UTAW

Sep. 28, 2007 | 2:31 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

it was "you black and white son of a bitch" then i added the theorem line and though two "bitches" was 1 too many...does that make sense?

i liked the action in this one.

that's possibly why i prefer it to 1 and 1.5

Sep. 28, 2007 | 2:10 PM darthnebula says:

Hmmm I dont even know if youd ever get around to reading this, anyway I felt that though yes this one lacked a little direction it was still a huge improvement on TM1 due to the a more indepth world. You evolved your style to allow for a more open feel with I felt better camera angles and some nice moments of detail like when the guy goes "You crazy black and white bastard" or what ever he says. And you can see the reflection in his goggles, kinda Ren and Stimpy type moments like that.

Now I wish I could finish my damn new movie :(

Sep. 28, 2007 | 2:34 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

yeah come on finish it already

thanks for the lol critique

What are you talking about?? your jokes are even better then tho south park joke! and way more better then family guy.. Keep on the ggod job.

Btw, you made the captain blush when he said "what beard?" I made my captain blush too in my tankmen spoof which I still have to submit (I released a preview version some time ago here on newgrounds). But hey, I'm just pointing at the coincidence =P

Sep. 28, 2007 | 2:35 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

im regretting the blushing scene, it might be too much out of character

let me know when you submit it, id like to see it

Sep. 28, 2007 | 2:45 PM Rucklo says:

Perhaps you should try to make a script, leave it for a week, get back to it, leave it for another week then have somone else look at it. Or whatever, my point is that scripts and ideas often needs to "breathe" to get as good as they can. TM2 was really good, though not as "tight" as the previous two were story-vice. Sure, TM2 was longer and had more things to it, but still, hte actual story didn't feel as forward-motion as the previous two was.
But hey, I love your style, this was really really awesome. My opinino in this is just picky details.

The blushing scene? That very much remminded me of stampers style.

Sep. 28, 2007 | 3:01 PM TomaMoto says:

Hey dude. I really enjoyed TM2, ESPECIALLY the animation. The tank chase scene was gorgeous and all the paper football was nostalgic to say the least. You've definitely had a fan in me from day one and that being said, I'd like to make a serious proposition.

While I can't think of any precedent to you outsourcing voice acting, I really hope you'll consider it. Obviously you are THE tankmen voice, but it seems feasible to have other actors voicing the non-principal characters (like the paper football thugs).

So here's my pitch to you: I'd love to do voicework for any of your animations. I have a pretty solid track record here on NG and can pretty much assure you that I'm reliable. Feel free to reference any authors with whom I've worked.

My resume and demo are available at <a href="http://voice.tomamoto.com">http://voice.tomamoto.com</a>

If you'd check it out some time, I'd be very grateful. In any case, thanks a lot for your consideration.

Forgot one thing.

I can completely relate to you on the whole script thing. I've never even took the time to sit down and write one. I usually end up just sitting down with a mic and recording random shit then rerecording what I like and animating it.

A perfect example being this:

Sep. 28, 2007 | 11:21 PM DelusionalState says:

I realy did like part 2 and your right it was a little random jumping from joke to joke, but I think that the story was kept together pretty good it wasn't that random. All and all it was more Family Guyish then South Parkish and I'd liked to see an equal distrobution between the two for optimule hilarity, maybe a little bit more like South Park then Family Guy so that it's not extreamly random.

Sep. 29, 2007 | 12:48 AM Jonimator says:

To be honest I have to agree, the script was kind of weak and jumpy and I prefered Tankman 1 to this one. It is still quite funny and well done. As I said though, seemed too jumpy.

Sep. 29, 2007 | 2:35 AM RKThrilla says:

all i got to say is that tankmen rules and you should continue the series as long as you can

Sep. 29, 2007 | 4:39 AM TheCriminalDuder says:

Randomness seems to be the key to making funny shit, but when ya actually take time to plan jokes and crap so it all fits well it works out better. I can honestly say I enjoyed TANKMEN 1 & 1.5 more then 2. 1 just had more comedic technics which worked well with it. 1.5 continued the same style of humor from 1. 2 didn't seem to carry out the same feeling of TANKMEN. It was funny as fuck, but just felt like somethin' was missin'. Maybe that was because of the random dailogue. Who knows. TANKMEN continues it's rain of popularity and success. I'll just sit back and wait patiently for 3... and maybe I'll make another TANKDUDER. To make up for the error filled last one. :P

Sep. 29, 2007 | 7:12 AM n00b-f00 says:

Personally I thought it was fucking hilarious. I know what you mean about the randomness though. The flow wasn't as tight as TM1. Still great though.

The animation was clear step-up. You have some really good shots, specifically when the Captain is called a "black and white son of a gun".

Audio was good. The music selection was awesome, and the syncing and popping wasn't a big deal.

It feels as if the "universe" and its characters are more developed allowing you to open up the world and do more with it.

All in all it was great. Probably a little better than the first when you consider the technical qualities. All you've got to do is keep the dialogue a little tighter and you've got guaranteed greatness.

Don't beat yourself up too bad, and don't shit the bed on the next one. No pressure.

Sep. 29, 2007 | 10:05 AM zoed says:

whooa whoaa you are sayin that you think TM2 is the weakist? how come? are you afraid people wont love ur non-cockinsmashing-funny- style...i mean...you think you become addicted to cock jokes? i think you did a great job....

Sep. 29, 2007 | 10:52 AM ultima09 says:

it was still great man

Sep. 29, 2007 | 11:07 AM ChrisNosal says:

I can kind of relate to not being able to stick with things. I always write things that I think are great at first, but as time goes on, I start noticing all these problems with it. So I'll rewrite it, but then things don't fit together as well, until finally I scrap the whole thing and start something new.

I sort of tried to change it up by writing something that seems like it has a plot, when it really doesn't...like it has fake "previously on" and "next time on" things that contain the "plot". But the actual episode is mostly just random conversation.

Still, I usually have a lot of fun with scripting/voicing, and the real problem is that I hate animating. I'm having trouble getting motivated to animate the one I'm working on now. Anywho, don't worry, Tankmen is great. I agree with the poster who said this episode fleshed out the world of Tankmen more. I like that. Keep it up.

Sep. 29, 2007 | 8:18 PM luigi-dude10 says:

I think you did a good job on part 2, sure there were some things that didn't go together but thats ok. The humor this time around was just the right amount for all the action that was in it. For part 2.5 or 3 or whatever you should keep sticking to random jokes along with the occasional cock joke, the one with the tank in part two was the funniest one yet. The only real problem I had with part 2 was that the dialouge didn't seem as memorable, I mean with the first one you had "And you made me lose my hard on...your gonna pay for that." classic. This ones defining dialouge was "You should have used the pathagorian therum, bitch!" Anywhosen, all of your Tankmen flashes are great, just look back on the old ones you did and see what the fans liked the most, then use something of that sort to help you in making your 3rd or 2.5th or whatever... :D

what do you mean a cluster fuck? i think the new tankmen is fantastic

Sep. 30, 2007 | 2:41 AM LichCoil says:

I liked tankmen 2 the best. 1 and 1.5 was little short, probably because I watched #2 first and I enjoyed it a lot. It reminded me of the LogFish's lil starcraft series which I liked a lot how the pace was moving, kept it interesting the whole time. Randomness is good as long as the story at least appears it might be getting somehwere like introducing the world or the characters or some other elements. I guess 1 and 1.5 had a different mood than 2, that looks pretty obvious. So make some more and make sure they're good ones! Make em even better than the last ones.

Sep. 30, 2007 | 6:20 AM TORTO21 says:

The natural direction and flow of your humor is fine. It's neither South Park nor Family Guy, but more along the lines of Robot Chicken or AHF in regards to the randomness and the colloquial referents--which in my opinion is doubly fine fuckin dandy.

I think you might have trouble emulating South Park type humor just because most of their jokes are running gags that span 22 minutes, but by all means, who the fuck am I to say you can't. As long as you keep pushing on.

As for your writing, who cares about staying on script. It's your piece. You're the Director. Directors script-change on the fly all the time if they feel a scene's not funny. Ever been to a live studio audience taping for a sitcom? Each take is usually different from the prior because each take is an opportunity to try a new joke-one that fits the scene better or is just funnier.

Concerning the flow of your script; it sounds real. Like a good writer, you enter scene late and leave early; no time wasting bullshit. No amateur fluff to try and cram some kind of amalgamative, useless plot down our pie holes. It's on cue and it's funny. Deal with it.

And just as a side complaint--Everyone who says, "Yeah, I noticed (this)" or "You should do (this)" or just ego-centered assholes telling you what to do for your next project... fuck 'em. They don't know the kind of work and talent it requires to produce something like this. Go with your instinct because your instinct's good.

TM2 fuckin rocked, bud. So did 1 and 1.5.

Because in my opinion it's far better than 1 and 1.5. Not just animation wise, but it seemed more of a story. It was something i could follow if it was on tv, like - not brilliantly hillarious, but a great piece of animation if you catch my drift.

Anyway - i just look forward to the next piece of work buddy.

Oct. 2, 2007 | 2:22 AM Masquatto says:

Okay, yes, when I rewatch it, there was indeed easing. I'm still curious as to why you couldn't put it in the beginning, where that stood out more to me. Was it the mouths or moving camera or something? If it was the mouths, you should consider putting the entire lip sequence along with the head and sound in a movie clip and then just giving the movie clip the time it needs on the main timeline. That way you can tween it with easing without having to worry about lining up different mouth frames along an eased tween.
If it has to do with camera issues, use the AS camera.
If it's not one of those... I dunno. AS camera and heavy movie clip use has always let me get away with easing when it'd normally be hard, even with characters with well over 30 or 40 layers. :S

"im regretting the blushing scene, it might be too much out of character"
It was one of the funniest jokes for me, actually, mostly because it was so out of character, yet still something you might see the tankmen do.

I think the main thing you should've regretted/changed on the second was the enemies. They just weren't interesting. In the first one, the enemies were defined with personality and funny quirks. In this one they were just accented jocks.

I do know what you mean by south park vs. family guy, and I think that's a good mindset to follow. However, South Park relies a lot on culture references, which you shouldn't do as much as they do with the setting you have.
However, they do a lot of things they do that you could pull off that make things really funny.
For example, character mannerisms--like Jimmy's studdering or Randy Marsh's melodramatic nature--can provide steady, relevant plot elements and jokes (this showed up in Tankmen 1 in a good way).
One that you haven't broken into a lot that South Park uses quite a bit is playing with taboos to a absurd--and oftentimes grotesque--degree. You can do something along the lines of having the character do something that would already be considered abnormal, have him push the envelope even more, and then have everyone else be okay with it. Or just redefine what's considered "PC" within your own movie, which, when contrasting our norms, can provide a lot of humor. Like...
[Tankmen A kills an enemy up close.]
Tankmen B: Oh man, his brains are all over the ground.
Tankmen A: Yeah, I got him good.
Tankmen B: Juicy.
[They both sigh with satisfaction.]
Tankmen B: So are you gonna teabag his body or-
Tankmen A: Nah you go 'head.
[Change scene]

I'm not saying to use that example, but you get the idea.

Anyhoo, I've been ranting out my ass for long enough, especially as one who's been too lazy to ever make a real movie, so I'll stop.
Looking forward to Tankmen 3. :]

please dude, i know all the animation tricks. ive dealt with this bullshit for years. the problems occur when the heads turn which is a major problem if the mouths are in one head symbol (angle changes included) and putting angle changes in the head symobl with the mouths is a also a major problem.

alot of the shit going on is way more complicated than you realize.

Trying to help out doesn't make me an ego-centered ass hole/dildo. It's quite the opposite. Everything submitted to NG has room for improvement, and if you think everyone else is below giving suggestions, then I strongly disagree with you, and would argue that you are an ego-centered dildo for being so presumptuous in your opinion.

sorry

im glad you liked it.

well jhonny, I dont think that you made a bad job after all. Its jjust that you take the flahs too seriously.
Cartoons are meant to be treated by what they are. CARTOONS!
You made and awesome job an all the tankmen stuff, you are very talented guy
(sorry for my bad english, remember I'm Mexican! )

Oct. 2, 2007 | 5:31 PM fhfhfh says:

I don't think that it has jokes family guy "style", I think there just jokes...
Coke jokes...(It's really sad to see a TankMan episode with only one coke joke in it!!
I'm not gay but it's just what makes it funny!!)

Oct. 2, 2007 | 8:43 PM JoeWigger says:

I couldn't agree more with what you said. The jokes are over all funny and the movie itself is great, but it doesn't flow all that well. Those three gyus in the wierd helmets were kinda dumb and a lot of the things they said when they were driving in the tank weren't all that funny (also, only two cock jokes). Up until that point however, the movie was perfect, and the hysterical duality conversations rivaled that of the original, and I loved that sniper. I seem to have written quite a bit, as I am supposed to be working right now but just don't want to. Anyways, great work.

Oct. 3, 2007 | 10:27 AM JohnnyUtah responds:

i guess i know what works now. at the very least it was an interesting experiment.

Oct. 2, 2007 | 10:03 PM MacUser says:

I thoroughly enjoyed tankmen 2, but I can understand what your coming from. However, the script might have some holes in it, but it's still a wonderful movie. I think that this is your best cartoon yet! (behind jimmy robinson...)

Oct. 2, 2007 | 10:55 PM MacUser says:

will you make a video on how you mix FBF and tweening so well?

Oct. 2, 2007 | 10:55 PM SkeletonKing says:

I agree it wasn't as concise as the first, but it was great in its own right. Overall it was funny, which I assume was the intent, with certain parts being XXXTRA funny. The first time I saw the scary tongue face made me fall out of my chair.

They're your cartoons so I won't ramble about how I would improve them. I'll simply say that if you need any help I have experience in writing and acting (in this case voice acting) so feel free to drop me a line. The art you have totally covered.

Looking forward to the next episode!

In the famous words of Miguel from Red Diamond Dragon Club: "I Hated it." Lol not really, but seriously now, i felt it was a bit lacking in comparison to TANKMEN 1 and 1.5. I enjoyed it and all but i felt, throughout the whole movie, like i was waiting for a moment that echoed the brilliance that was TANKMEN 1 and 1.5. I agree with what you said about the script and all, i think for your next one you should focus more on on event in a shorter film that is more consistently funny throughout than a longer film with good jokes, but having them spread out throughout. Anyway, keep up the good work, i'll make sure i check out any new submission you make.

If Tankmen was made into a TV series it would be an absolute hit, it would be the new Simpsons, there would be more views on the first month than there was in South Parks entire time on air, then 17 years later there would be a Tankmen movie, which would be the film of the year. And then we will mourn as the legacy comes to an end.

Trust me, it will happen, and please include me in your Emmy awards speech plz.

Oct. 3, 2007 | 3:10 PM JonBro says:

I'm kinda nitpicky with most of my movies after making them, too. I always feel it could have been a lot better. Right now I'm trying to make things that won't run into this problem =P

So will this be a Tankmen 2.5, perhaps? I gotta say, that idea for two things happening at once in separate movies was absolutely BRILLIANT. I'm really hoping that's what happens with this one. The only thing is, there doesn't seem to be much of a place to intersect two stories in Tankmen 2... Perhaps Private Skittles will be talking with us some more? Whatever it is, I can't wait to see it!

Oct. 3, 2007 | 3:13 PM k1rby says:

Hey there, Mr. Utah,

I just wanted to add my two cents that I don't think Tankmen 2 was as random as you thought it was. I actually thought it was very nicely sequenced and thought out when I watched it. I understand the difference you're talking about when you compare Family Guy and South Park humor; I often study those different types of humor myself. But Tankmen 2 didn't strike me as being "Family Guy-esque" at all. I mean, Family Guy's random is so entirely random, relying on hypothetical situations or contrived flashbacks to overload the viewer with 5 second sound bites of jokes. Your animation didn't really do much of that at all.

True, there were some more random bits, like the Back to the Future references. But because of your sense of timing, it didn't feel like it was being random for the purpose of shocking us with a punchline. That's the difference between TM2 and Family Guy. The Kool-aid guy bustin' through the wall is meant to surprise us with an unexpected punchline at breakneck speed. Your punchlines - like "Goddamn it, Steve, you know I'm a sucker for Back to the Future references." - are delivered at a much more handleable speed, which makes your timing seem nothing like Family Guy. At least to me.

So, yeah. I just wanted to give my two cents that, while I understand it's just you nitpicking your work, don't second guess yourself. It was still freaking hilarious, amazingly animated, and enjoyable to watch.

I'm very much looking forward to your future stuff.

Tankmen 2 was hilarious. I don't really see any problem with it. It feels like those guys are really close and deal with more personal issues , like birthdays, while they're being chased. I also like how they're all connected or reference the previous installments. Tnakmen 2 rocked, dude.

Oct. 3, 2007 | 4:47 PM JohnnyUtah responds:

by episode 5 its gonna be ALL jokes referencing other episodes and everybody will hate me
