SF COLLAB THINGS

Posted by JohnnyUtah May. 18, 2009 @ 9:07 PM EDT

POWER OF 3

Jacksmack was the first brave soul to inquire if i was available to do art for the power of 3 event, but I'm stuck watching Deadliest Catch for the summer..Soooo if you're an artist looking for a programmer...and as we all know programmers are in short supply, CONTACT HIM.

SF COLLAB

- This collab pushed flash even harder than the MGS collab did. In fact if stamper didnt keep downsaving to flash 8 (and god knows why the same file is larger in CS3 and even LARGER in CS4) this thing would have never even exported. I'm going to write a mean letter to adobe because this is getting rediculous.

- The SF Collab is the first movie in the existance of the universe to have medals. Some are easy, some are quite tricky. Our personal favorite is "Ono Boners", a tribute to the pervy producer of Street Fighter IV. Somehow every interview he's ever done segues from SFIV to wanting to smell girls panties or something to that effect.

Also, based on a bunch of reviews (and checking your medals) many of you are NOT watching to the very end. If you stick it out, you get a medal, plus some bonus content.

(and I know we look like real dipshits for being so late with these collabs all the time, but we do come through in the end AMIRITE?)

From what I've been hearing (aka lots of begging and pleading in PMs), we're gonna give you cats and dogs another week or so to get in your street fighter collab piece...

The deadline was initially the 10th, but if you need till..say...the 17th we'll give you busy little fuckers some more time. I think we could all use it.

p.s., if you need a refresher on the rules, GO HERE.

have a wonderful, wonderful day.

DING DONG

Posted by JohnnyUtah Jan. 29, 2009 @ 4:29 PM EST

You still have 11-12 days to submit something for the street fighter collab.

We've gotten a handful of promising submissions so far..mostly dealing with dicks and nipples..AHEM..

ANYWAYS

If you still need any good reference here's a site that just popped up on my radar with lots of hi-res art for practically every street fighter:

streetfighterhd.com

If you need any motivation..here it is:
IF THIS COLLAB IS NO LESS THAN "TOTALLY BITCHIN" THE TIME TRAVELLING TRIANGLE WILL RETURN. MAKE OF THAT WHAT YOU WILL.

GOOD DAY.

______________________________________

How the fuck did this get to the front page?
it's short,
it's badly animated
and
it's probably made in 10 minutes.

______________________________________

OK seriously some crap movies got front page before....but this is uber crap
the animation was crap(just two shapes on a white backround?)
and using two shapes as characters is just a lazy excuse not to draw some real characters and when they where talking they were just jumping up and down.
so ill give you two stars, one for taking 2 minutes of your life to make this and one for actually finding somebody to voice the other shape.

______________________________________

Keeping the spirit of NG alive there, huh?

Up untill now I've always thought the front page was meant for movies that showed talent. Sure, some pop up once in a while that lack talent but are in some way unique just plain funny.

Too bad that's not the case right now.

I have a hard time believing, well actually I don't because I know it's bullshit, but this would've never made front page if you weren't working for NG. Seriously, this movie (for lack of a better suiting name) lacks pretty much everything it can miss to make a great movie, so why would anyone put it on the front page? It's not even funny!

Great submission get lost in the portal while at the same time this shit takes it's rightful place. Do you think that's worth it? You having a few laughs because this bullshit is on the frontpage and people complaint about it, while at the same time a movie that someone worked on for weeks or months is overlooked?

I'll give you 3 stars for the qualities you've shown us in this movie:
- You can talk and record it: go you!
- You can tween shapes (that's an underrated quality)!
- Bonus point for actually getting me to write this!

I'm not expecting a serious reply to this so just go ahead, be yourself, and write something about dicks or something (because that would be terribly original!).

Love,

Vincoid.

you know how i know that this sucks? because i can do better. i have done better, and my "better" ended up getting blammed after an hour. ill tell you what i told stamper. im not going to suck your cock. you can do better, so do better.

+2 for voice acting.

Dude Newgrounds isn't like this anymore. It went from being a vulgar immature site to being about impressive works and a community of flash artists.

I think that, because the culture of newgrounds has changed, so has the expectations of its artists, especially that of admins.

Although I like that you are trying to bring back what was so great and funny about the old newgrounds, it's a totally different community now. Although if you submitted this a few years ago it would have been appropriate for the times...newgrounds has now become a learning place and community of hobbyists and so it is in fact insulting that a major representative of the site would submit this.

I respect the humor, but I just don't find it appropriate of today's standards for this website.

Please remember that people look up to you and that you represent newgrounds. By submitting something like this, knowing that it would be well recognized and get a decent score merely because you are well-known and help run the site is just as insulting as I bet many people would feel if Adam Phillips intentionally submitted garbage.

Again, it is not that I don't understand the humor to this, it is just that it doesn't fit into the newgrounds culture anymore.

Nice effort though to bring back the old funnys :P

Super Judge Dredd-A-Thon / Tablet Advice

Posted by JohnnyUtah Dec. 2, 2008 @ 4:50 PM EST

Sometimes I get asked how I go about drawing my silly crap so here's a little test video I threw together:

.

Maybe next time I'll spend more time on it...and I need to work on improving that terrible youtube video quality.

edit:

Just so you know what's going on, I usually do a rough sketch, turn on the onion skinning, than a refined sketch, THEN the final art.

coloring can be blocked off with lines, then deleting those lines AND/OR grouping your line art and coloring behind it, then ungrouping it. I used both those methods in this video.

all said, this took me about 25 minutes

edit 2:

my opinion on the current line of wacom tablets based on my own experiences, because a few of you have asked. I'm reciting from memory, i may have small details wrong. alright here we go:

BAMBOO - the most affordable model, comes in 2 sizes, I'd recommend the larger models, but any of em will do.. Good all round tablet and you can do pretty much everything with it. Best if you work mostly in flash...works just as well as the intuos tablets for flash work.

GRAPHIRE - this used to be cheap-o model tablet, but I guess they turned into the battery powered wireless model now. I've never used the new ones, but I guess if you like sitting back away from your desk and drawing on your lap...hey this might be the way to go.

INTUOS - comes in many sizes, I recommend the 6x8 or 6x11 depending on if you have a regular or widescreen monitor. keep the size ratios between tablet and monitor as close as possible.

It has more levels of sensitivity as well as determining the tilt of your pen, great for flash but even moreso photoshop. tilt comes in handy when using photoshop brushes like the airbrush. also includes programmable shortcut keys on the tablet surface.

CINTIQ - comes in 3 sizes. 12WX being the smallest and most affordable. (it's very close in dimensions to the intuos 6x11, but SLIGHTLY bigger) I like this size because I can lay it flat on my desk and still have the keyboard in front for easy access to key commands. you can draw directly on it's screen, but beware, the larger models may have some lag between cursor and pen. the 12WX has some very, very minimal lag, - only apparent when you're drawing very quickly. all models have a built in stand for drawing at an elevated angle. also comes with programmable shortcut keys on the tablet surface. Did i mention these are all expensive?

check em all out at wacom.com (but don't buy em there, check amazon.com or other pc retailers for better prices.)

...................

And look, for anybody thinking they NEED the best and most expensive shit, keep in mind I've seen guys draw art and create flash animation for television using an old graphire 4x5 wacom rivaling the best quality on this site. If you're into drawing, ALL these tablets run circles around doing it with a mouse. EXCEPT for you luis, because we all know you're a weirdo. :3

GOOD LUCK!

Newgrounds LittleBigPlanet

Posted by JohnnyUtah Oct. 4, 2008 @ 12:04 PM EDT

We somehow snagged a littlebigplanet beta code here at the office, so I spent a few hours cranking out a newgrounds/back to the future inspired level.

.

You probably can't read the text all that well but basically the Captain tells you that Dad's kid went back in time and destroyed the future so you need to work you way through the level to the buried time machine, go back in time and stop "me" from Dad n me. WHATEVER HIS NAME IS GOD THIS IS AWKWARD.

Anyways, besides the tons of glitches and malfunctions I ran into just building relatively simple contraptions, it seems like it's got a ton of potential. I uploaded it so if you got the beta just keep an eye out for "Newgrounds To The Future" AND CHECK OUT MY BITCHING TIME TRAVELLING EFFECTS YEAH!

..and i cut the audio out because there was a bunch of talking going on in the background and it was distracting...so play your favorite epic music and watch.

Braid and artist programmer collaborations

Posted by JohnnyUtah Aug. 6, 2008 @ 9:57 AM EDT

Just some random stuff here..

I was checking out Braid, the 2nd of the XBOX SUMMER OF GAMES or whatever exciting marketing lingo Microsoft is calling it. (Castle Crashers is 5th in line)

Anyways, it's got a pretty nice painterly style, and you can't tell from screenshots but there's several moving layers which make it seem very alive and vibrant. I was contemplating how they went about making it and came across THIS ARTICLE.

As you can see from reading it, the programmers gave the artist bare bones screenshots with the functional but fairly lifeless platform and puzzle elements - and then several examples of the artist renderings of the same level.

I bring this up since I've had roughly two failed, half hearted attempts at it..

One was a Territory War like stage afroninja mapped out below and the other was a stage from Project Inthri 3...and you can see my art swap HERE.

I find this type of thing fun to do, I just wish I could actually follow through on a project one of these days.

Anyways check out Braid it's NEAT.

COMICON POSTER 2008

Posted by JohnnyUtah Jul. 16, 2008 @ 3:19 PM EDT

I was short on time, but here's what I came up with for this years Comicon NG banner. It will be 3 feet x 9 feet and it'll be hoisted 8 feet up in the air, next to the equally big Behemoth banner that Dan had just finished as well.

CLICK HERE FOR FULL NON-CROPPED DELICIOUSNESS

Anyways, though guilt ridden, I had to draw the line somewhere and stopped jamming in characters at 33. Sorry if I excluded anybody, but this poster contains way more than last years, and maybe next year it will be even more ridiculous.

...

Slightly on and off topic, but of all the issues I've had with Flash over the years, one of the most staggeringly incompetent problems has been exporting hi-res images from it.

This poster ended up being around 8000x27000 pixels so it was reasonably sharp at 9 feet high, and I literally had to export over 20 sections and paste them back together into a master photoshop document for printing. WHAT A BURDEN.

WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST USE AN ILLUSTRATOR FILE?
Because I have a few photoshop effects, such as desaturation and color overlays that flash *can* do it but not well...but that is another topic for another day.

I hope you poindexters at adobe can fix this so I don't have to deal with this shit ever again.

ANYWAYS, if you're going to Comicon, feel free stop by the booth and say hi. And a word to the wise, don't loiter in front of the booth for 5 hours at a time all sweaty and nervous I WON'T NAME ANY NAMES but there was one guy in a black t-shirt and he looked like he was about to stab Tom and eat the flesh off his face - everybody else was totally cool.

That's all, have a good time.
